Agia Galini

is a small fishing village at the northern flank of the Messara Bay on the south coast of

Crete.

It lies on the south slope of the small Vouvala Massif, which parts the bigger Kedros Massif from the south coast, and marks the south-eastern tip of the governmental district of

Rethymnon.

The most scenic road to Aghia Galini runs from Nea Kria Vrisi via Melambes around the summit of Mt. Vouvala (947 meters).

First open views of Mt. Kedros (1,776 meters) which frequently decorates it's summit with a small cloud, and of the Ida Massif (up to 2,456 meters).

Then the road winds down the slope and opens views of the fishing village, it's port, and the entire Messara bay until Matala on the opposite coast.

Just above the port there are some comfortable tavernas and kafenions of typical Mediterranean flair.

In recent years, many small hotels and apartments facilities have been built on the steep slopes further up, enjoying unique views of the village, the coast and the Messara bay.

The former fishing village has vastly grown this way.

Today there are several supermarkets, and the shops on the scene have adapted to the needs of a rather relaxed type of tourism.

In eastern direction form the port, a short path runs along the foot of a steep cliff to a sandy beach.

It is lined by tavernas and small hotels, and deck chairs and sunshades are for rent there.
